For those of you who have been in business for some time it might seem that thinking innovatively is a luxury you just don’t have the time, energy or resources for; instead your days are spent putting out fires and following the same trusted processes day after day. Sound familiar?
If so, you need to take a huge step back and spend a moment viewing the bigger picture for your organisation; this could be the most important thing you do for your business this year!
Here’s why:
Instead of assuming that the innovators in society are the lucky ones who just have lots of ideas come to them (which they don’t), the secret actually comes down to being consistent in your innovative approach. Try this; take a look everyday at a small, mundane thing within your organisation and think about (and discuss) how it could be improved or changed. Just a small, but regular, step like this can have a far reaching and positive impact on your business; think of it like the butterfly effect.
In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions, where a small change at one place in a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences to a later state.

At Blue Ocean Systems, we recently embarked on a NBDA initiative to implement the butterfly effect, and many other innovation strategies, into our everyday thinking. By making small changes we hope to bring our clients, customers and colleagues a better and more meaningful service, each and every day.
We will be bringing more updates and posts throughout our project so watch this space for more design thinking inspiration!
